Fix Your Air Conditioner this spring

One of the most annoying things is a broken air conditioner, especially during the hot summer months. However, there are a few maintenance steps you can take to keep your device working properly.

Make sure the air filters are clean first. This is one of the simplest air conditioning maintenance tasks, but it often causes many problems. In the United States, many AHUs have a filter in the oven itself or in a ceiling or wall vent. In window air conditioners and split systems, filters will be installed in the same units. The recommended time period is to clean or replace the air filter every 3 months. If you live in an area that is highly exposed to smoke, air particles, or allergens, you may need to replace the filter earlier.

Secondly, be sure to check that the thermostat is working properly. If you have a digital thermostat, working batteries are required as they power the device. Most digital devices will indicate on the panel when the batteries are low and even remind you when to change the air filter. If the thermostat is installed in the unit itself, such as window units and some ductless systems, check for obstructions or debris affecting the sensor.

Third, check the outdoor compressor for grass, debris, or obstructions. Sometimes grass and other debris can enter the device and prevent it from working properly. Most outdoor units can be cleaned with a water hose, or with special solutions available from most hardware stores. You can refer to the specifications of your model for more details. This also applies to the outdoor air compressor for split air conditioners. For window air conditioners, make sure there is no debris, bird nests, etc. on the exposed part of the unit.

Fourth, especially when dealing with aircon servicing in Singapore, it is important to ensure that the capacity of the air conditioner can cool or heat the room. For example, many two-story houses have one apartment per floor. If you’ve recently moved to a new home, this is especially important to check. If the machine capacity is less than the required square footage, the machine will work harder and will not achieve the desired result. In this case, you may need to add another unit, such as a room-specific window unit, or replace the unit entirely, which can be costly.

Maintaining an air conditioner and extending its life is something that any homeowner can do. With regular maintenance, your air conditioner will work all year round.
